This summer we’ve had Frankie Harris undertaking work experience with us at Richborough’s Birmingham HQ. Studying for A levels in economics, Maths and Philosophy, he has his eyes on a university degree in Economics and was keen to get a taste for the world of land promotion.

Why did you choose work experience at Richborough
Up until recently I wasn’t aware of what land promotion was, so I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of how it all works, the steps that lead up to investment and the different roles involved in the process. I chose Richborough because of their impressive rise to fame and rapid growth, from starting in 2003 to now employing over 50 people across three different UK cities. So, for me, choosing Richborough was a no-brainer compared to their competitors.
What did you do at Richborough and what did you most enjoy?
I really enjoyed a wide variety of experiences across different departments and got lots of one-to-one with individuals to provide a solid understanding of the business. It felt very well organised and there was an obvious amount of effort put in to giving me a varied and interesting week that was relevant to my current and future studies. For example, the finance taught me how they organise their invoices and make their payments, and the land studies department showed me how they estimate the value of the land and how to search for good opportunities to follow up. Also, I learnt how they assess the constraints on potential sites by having to deal with flooding, protected areas, rehabilitating wildlife, noise/air pollution and more.
I most enjoyed my time with the land studies team where I got to use a software called ‘land stack’ to find new leads, assess possible constraints and estimate a value for the land.
Would you consider a career in land promotion?
Before this week I knew very little about land promotion and was unsure whether I would want to work in the industry but now I think that land promotion could be a very real possibility for me. I’ve come to see it as a very welcoming community of people with a strong social aspect to the job, which is very appealing. I think Richborough has opened my eyes to some new opportunities.
