As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s an opportunity to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality and the work still left to do. In real estate, a historically male-dominated industry, women continue to challenge barriers, drive innovation, and reshape the sector.
However, true empowerment goes beyond representation; it requires creating environments where women can thrive, lead, and inspire the next generation.
I loved being in the room at the Women In Property Awards last October to hear from all those that are truly championing mentorship, challenging outdated norms, and prioritising workplace inclusivity.
Despite progress, women are still underrepresented in the property industry, particularly outside of London and particularly in leadership roles. Many have had to navigate boardrooms where they are the only woman in the room, facing the added pressure to prove themselves. Yet, this challenge can also be a strength. Being different can be a positive, diversity of thought fuels innovation, and inclusive teams make better decisions, benefiting businesses and communities alike.
Seeing women in leadership helps to shift perceptions and inspire confidence in those coming up the ranks. Mentorship is an important part of Richborough’s corporate structure, guiding and supporting young professionals not only helps individuals but strengthens the industry as a whole. This isn’t specifically about gender of course, but as a woman in a senior leadership role here, I do take that seriously. Someone always has to go first, so if you can’t find a role model, be the trailblazer for others.
Creating pathways for women to succeed means acknowledging the diverse responsibilities many juggle, particularly working parents. At Richborough, I helped to instigate a digital business system that aimed to increase efficiency but it also supports employees in managing their commitments, so we can better support our team, creating a workplace that works for people.
Because when businesses actively support work-life balance, they attract and retain top talent. Property firms that embrace flexible policies, career development programs, and equitable opportunities will not only foster a more diverse workforce but also become stronger and more resilient.
International Women’s Day is more than a celebration, it’s a call to action. There is much still to do to make sure our industry is more representative of the diverse communities we’re here to serve. By fostering an environment where all professionals can thrive, property will not only become more equitable but also more innovative, dynamic, and successful.
Let’s commit to building a future where the next generation of women in real estate don’t just participate but lead, shape, and redefine the industry.
