Senior Urban Designer Neil Oxley has worked for Richborough for two years, helping to drive forward our design team and our capacity for complex masterplanning.
Here, Neil shines a light on what our design team does and the role it plays in our wide organisation.
What does a typical day involve for a Senior Urban Designer?
This can vary. I will be either be developing Concept Plans and Masterplans for the Land Team, which involves looking at the site, its constraints, history, local policies and community needs and looking at what the correct density, tenure and layout should be of the site; or I also provide design review on consultant drawings for our Outline Applications.
What’s exciting is that we’re increasingly developing design codes to embed principles into schemes that give communities confidence in the design, layout and suitability of these new developments that are coming in to their neighbourhoods.
What do you enjoy about your role?
We’re a small and very busy team and we work closely with other disciplines with Richborough and with external consultants and stakeholders. There’s lots of variety, lots of discussion and I really value this to find the best solution for each individual site.
What do you enjoy about working for Richborough?
The people at Richborough are great to work with, there is so much talent and experience in the team and an incredible work ethic, everyone pulling in the same direction to achieve the best result.
What is your proudest achievement with Richborough?
The opportunity to produce the plot viability calculator, which we’ve finessed over the past year to provide invaluable appraisal stats for sites. It’s great to see this being put to use, to aid the our teams and process. I’m particularly proud to have had a hand in that.
